Nebulizer Treatment For Asthma
Nebulizers have been used quite a lot in these recent times due to their convenience and of course the way they work wonderfully. An asthma nebulizer basically changes asthma medication from a liquid to a mist, so that it can be inhaled into the lungs with much more ease. Asthma inhalers can't be used by everyone, especially the younger children, due to which it is much better if medicines are inhaled through a nebulizer. As asthma nebulizer is available almost everywhere but there are a few accessories that are needed for making it work properly. For nebulizer treatment for asthma the things that you will need are an air compressor, nebulizer cup, mask or mouthpiece, medication and compressor tubing.
Many people have a nebulizer at home but a surprising number does not know anything about how to use it in an effective manner. Here is a step by step guide of how to do this by yourself successfully.
1. First of all, the air compressor should be kept on a sturdy surface that is able to support its weight.
2. It is very important for you to wash your hands with soap and water before you start with the asthma treatment as cleanliness is a must.
3. The medication should be very carefully measured and the contents poured into the nebulizer cup. Most medication today do not need any measuring as they're already measured, but if you do have to measure the medicines make sure that the device you use is clean and free of any germs.
4. When you turn on the compressor, a light mist should start emitting from the back of the tube opposite the mouthpiece. When you see that it means that the medicine is now ready to be inhaled.
5. Before starting the procedure, place yourself in a comfortable chair with proper posture. If you are giving your child this treatment then he or she should preferably sit in your lap. Masks are sometimes necessary for children and if that is so; place the mouthpiece correctly over your child's mouth. Medicine can be inhaled very easily with slow but deep breaths.
6. You should continue the treatment until all the medicine is evaporated which usually is ten minutes or so. Some will be evaporated in thin air whereas a lot will be inhaled by you. One good indication to stop is when the nebulizer starts making a slow stuttering noise.
7. Sometimes you can get jittery or drowsy when you are undergoing this treatment. If this happens you should discontinue the treatment for at least five minutes but start again after that time. It's absolutely imperative for you to take the whole doze.
After you are done with the treatment you should properly clean and store the nebulizer for future use. It's very easy to care for your nebulizer, and should be done after each and every use as proper cleaning and disinfecting your asthma nebulizer equipment will ultimately act as a guard against any infection. You should take care that while you're cleaning the nebulizer you should preferable do that in a dust- and smoke-free area away from open windows.
After you are done with the cleaning, the next step is to properly store it somewhere safe. For that first of all cover the compressor with a clean cloth and store it in a cool dry place. Putting the air compressor on the floor either for treatments or for storage is a definite no-no and should be avoided at all costs.
