Swedish Massage Techniques

Massages are a therapy devised upon muscles in human body to release its stiffness and tension. Human body, when overworked, develops waste products in the form of lactic acid that cause muscle soreness and stiffness and Massages concentrate on those muscles and apply the right amount and type of pressure to resume body's well-being and health. One of the main purposes of Massages is natural fitness of human body. Experienced practitioners and massage therapists can tell the condition of single tissue by just one touch. It aids them with determining the pressure to be applied to each tissue or muscle to release its tension or stiffness.

Swedish massage is among the traditional massages that have provided base for modern massage techniques. It is known as the “classic massage" in Sweden. It has been in practice since 1800 and it was developed by Henrik Ling in Sweden. It is very popular in the European countries due to its benefits. Swedish massage techniques have been made a part of Stress Management courses in many areas of the world.

Swedish massage techniques have been proven useful for releasing both physical and mental stress, decreasing knee pain, resolving muscle stiffness, betterment of blood circulation and soothe the nervous system.

Swedish massage is carried out by covering client's body with a sheet, a method called ‘draping'. Massage oils or massage lotions are utilized to carry out the massage. The massage therapists use five kinds of techniques for Swedish massage. The five basic strokes in Swedish massage are:

  • Effleurage
  • Effleurage involves long strokes are performed by hand or palm. These long stokes are carried out from neck till the lower part of spine, shoulder to limbs. After limbs strokes on heart are made in order to stimulate the blood flow.



  • Petri sage
  • This technique comprises or kneading and compression movements. The muscles are at first massaged with round movements and then pressurized in order to release the nerve tension.

  • Friction
  • Friction technique is very beneficial for muscle relaxation as well as joint pain. In this method deep and circular movement at the bony areas with thumbs or fingertips are executed which lessens the joint pain and makes muscles flexible.

  • Tapotement
  • Tapotement is a technique in which rhythmic tapping is engaged, using hand or fists or fingertips. These are brisk and muscle relaxing movements that reduce that stretching effect of muscles

  • Vibration or Shaking
  • These are oscillatory movements that vibrate the body. These fine and rapid shaking techniques increase blood circulation. Vibration is very beneficial for patients of lower back pains.

    Swedish Massages Techniques have positive effects on people with different physical and mental problems. Swedish Massaging techniques give relaxation to mind and body; while maintaining healthy well-being and relieving inner tensions and stresses. Swedish Massages help body get rid of toxins which improve the respiratory system of human body. It increases the flexibility of muscles and lessens muscles soreness and fatigue. These techniques enhance blood circulation, reduce muscular pain, comforts weak muscles, loosen the nervous system. It is also very beneficial for people with blood pressure problems as it brings the blood pressure to a normal and healthy level.
