Weight Loss During First Trimester Of Pregnancy

There are always patterns to look out for when whilst establishing a pattern between pregnancy and weight gain. Once these patterns are spotted, things can become a bit easier. Sometimes the abnormal weight gain is more directly related to the fetal development, even more than we really consider. But weight loss during first trimester of pregnancy has been noticed much often, why and how, we'll try to find out in this article.

There is a consistent weight gain that is to be expected in every pregnancy that is three to five pounds in the first trimester, 10 to 14 pounds in the second and third. This is a much more favourable situation for both the mother and the baby, so to say. Why should we be concerned about weight loss then? Basically because weight loss in the first trimester means that the child is growing at the expense of the mother's health and the mother is not getting enough nutrition. If the mother is over or under fed, it is usually found it during the prenatal visits to the doctor, thus the importance that is usually placed upon it. Care must be taken on conveying to the patient the significance of taking a wholesome diet and not anything just for the sake of gaining weight. Weight gain is not the objective, taking a good diet is and weight gain is an indicator of that sometimes.

You can have a good diet and still lose weight; your health provider must be able to analyze your diet in this respect. You should also not get worried about any fluctuations in weight as this is sometimes expected. Even if the weight is stable it is not a good sign, as it means that whatever she's having is spent on the health of the baby. There should be some weight gain, and as little weight loss as possible. Also by not gaining weight, her ketones could get liberated in her blood which could lead to the under development of the fetal brain as they are said to be toxic. If the mother is having an abnormal amount of nausea and vomiting these ketones should be checked as they could be a cause of this.

Some researchers have shown that fetal growth retardation is the end result of poor maternal nutrition. If the health is compromised upon in the earlier days of the pregnancy, there could be severe harm done to the baby resulting in a small head and normal body. If it happens later in the pregnancy the brain might not be harmed but the body might be. Therefore the health providers give extra emphasis to good nutrition in the first trimester.

You can monitor your weight each week at home as well, no need to run to the doctor. If something alarming is happening like there is a rapid weight loss without any reason then by all means go see a doctor and get yourself checked as only a doctor can help you in such occasions. Other than that just take care of your health, live healthy and eat healthy.
